Hi, my daughter 1985 Mini Mayfair has factory fitted central locking and alarm. The central locking which is activated via the alarm fob seems to forget what state its is in. There is an led indicator red light on a sub panel ,RHS of dash, Knee height which flashes when the alarm is arming and is off when the doors un locked/alarm off. There is also a toggle switch on this panel which has two positions, this seems to effect the RED LED status. However, the problem is that when you turn the ignition off, sometimes the alarm RED LED goes out? Then you cannot lock the car with the fob, only by key, which then overrides this fault state and locks the doors. The alarm status LED does not change,ie OFF. The only way to sort this is to turn the battery isolator to off and give the whole alarm, central locking system a hard DC reset. This clears the fault and the alarm and central locking are in sync again. After a few trips the same fault occurs?
Any thoughts out there? Cheers Minispike

Err, no it doesn't! Dealer fit maybe but any alarm fitted in 1985 would be fairly basic and yours seems to have more modern features, can you find out what make of alarm it is? The central locking will always work by the key due to the switches in the motors, it's not over-riding any alarm settings when that happens. Sounds like the switch is what's known as a valet switch, and should be used when the car is being handed over to a valet parking attendant or goes for servicing. Alarms tend to have all sorts of settings that can be programmed using a combination of the valet switch, ignition switch and fob which you may have altered accidentally. It sounds like it's in some sort of anti carjacking mode. If you can find out what make it is, someone might have the programming codes.
