i have become concerned with a clunking from my transmission, it happens when i press the accelerator and when i let off .
i have already changed the cv joints and fitted taper bearings, also the driveshafts seem to have no play at the pot joint, but there is a circlip of some description on the driveshaft and i cant remove the driveshaft or the clip?????

instead i removed the pot joint and driveshaft in one peice...... forgot to empty oil,, contents now on floor doh!!!!!

when i checked the diff ends ( the splined shaft) it has considerable play in it, about 1 cm all around, is this bad?????? bearings need changing????

is this possible ,if so is it difficult and would i need special tools???

I there is that amount of movement in the output shafts then it's fairly evident that the first the mica washers in the diff are worn, if present at all as they tend do disintegrate, this it the first sign of the diff needing a rebuild, as that play will work its way through and is probably the result of a worn diff pin and planet's...

Basically it's an engine out gearbox off job... strip, rebuild...

As for special tools, there's an FAQ which shows the necessary equipment to rebuild the box, and how to do it... Here

or you ask some kind gentleman to rebuild it for you in exchange for a few groats... :cheese:

i have looked at the faq previously, it is very detailed. looks like i might be using the great british transport services then and take the car off the road

the only way is to completely overhaul the box then? would you say that is purely down to experience and knowing that something else is likely to have suffered due to the fault
also i have read that you do gear box rebuilds how much do you charge for this service, also i take it you use the gearbox from the customer?

Is it definately from the diff dude? a clunking when pressing and releasing the gas is 9 times out of 10 worn engine steady bushes and the noise is the exhaust downpipe hitting the floorpan.

Just thought it may be worth mentioning before you go ripping the engine out, apologies if you've already checked this though.

Nick

Good point about the steadies Bud...

but 10mm wobble on the output shaft :nugget: is not helping matters...

You may get away with just stripping the diff and rebuilding, but if the diffs that knackered, it would be worth looking at the box while it's out anyway...

Even on a 50 quid rebuild I'll pull the diff apart and replace things like the micas and diff pin if it's shot, but good used diff pins are getting a little scarse in my garage so may have to be a new one ( they aint that expensive )

well i think i might get away with the cheaper rebuild as the box is off a sportspack so its not too old, also it isnt giving any grief, there is no crunching or clunking in gear slection. so that would be just the cost of the basic rebuild £50 and the differential £25.

if so i will have to look into getting this sorted fairly promptly as i dont really want to keep using my car in fear of breaking something else or worsening the problem.

Hey Guessworks

My pot joints wobble in my diff would that mean it needs a rebuilt and how much would it cost me if you could do it

Many Thanks Chris
