Has anybody used some kind of gas tester to tune their mini?

If so what one did you use and how was it?

As far as I know it it the same as when you take it to a garage without a rolling road and ask for a tune up.

I tuned mine at the mot station :(

If you ask nicely they might let you if there not busy.

Was considering this one maybe http://www.halfords....tegoryId_165557 but for £80, thought it would be best to see if anyone had used one or how it was. Might see if I can borrow one first and see how it goes.

£80 is getting towards the cost of a wideband gauge that you could fit permanently to the car. A Colourtune is quite effective

I agree with both those statements.

A gas test analyser is only realy much good for testing idle emmisions.

Get a wideband seup and you can tune your car in all throttle ranges and loads.

Anybody know of a reasonably priced kit? Ones ive been looking at are £180+. My mini seems to be running rich atm, so once i get it RR'ed I can monitor it.

I would like to know this aswell, cheapest I found was £140.

If you held the engine at certain revs 2k, 3k, 4k etc and took readings could you not tune this way? Or would the reading fluctuate too much?

Also what readings should I expect to get. So what is too ritch and what is too lean?

The gunsons meter / colourtune will do a decent job of calibrating the mixture if you have the right needle. To profile a needle to the engine it needs to be under load.

Perhaps I was a little optimistic on the price, you could manage it for a ton if you don't mind getting your soldering iron out http://www.14point7.com/SLC-DIY.php

Pretty sure I have the right needle, was recomended by minispares, but I think he just used winsu.

So for best performance I want a ratio between 12.5 and 13.5.

I have no problem getting the soldering iron out but don't really fancy waiting for it to come all the way from the States. Also might not work out that cheap including postage, import duty and the current exchange rate.

Think I might go for the Gunsons gastester, get it from halfords and if it's no good take it back.

You can get the Gunson gas testers off ebay for alot less than halfords.

We bought one for about £35 IIRC.

Went to Halfords at lunch and they had no gas testers and colourtunes were only £25 so I got one of them instead.

Another member on here has kindly offered to lend me a gas tester so I will give that a try at some point as well. Will also check eBay and see if one is going cheap.

Just remember the Colourtune is only useful for testing emissions at idle. The needle you have maybe somewhere near the mark but you will still need to get it rolling roaded to get it setup properly and any profiling that may need to be done.
