Hi all, has the thread on wheel studs always been the same? I have an '89 mini, but plan on fitting Hillman Imp steels, which have the same nut seating angle as pre '84 mini steels, so ideally I need to fit pre '84 nuts to an '89. Should this work?

To the very very very best of my knowledge the stud thread is the same no matter what the year. So all you should need is a set of standard steel wheel nuts and jobs a good-un.
I certainly don't believe that there was any change from 84-89 anyway

Mines a 1991 and has imperial studs. Can't remember the exact size but certainly not metric, even though some of the brake parts are.
Minipsares list many different studs but the only difference seems to be in the length.

They are 3/8"unf for the whole of production......
Pre 84 did not have a seat angle unless you are talking late 1275GT with 12" wheels & the 1979 Special ...... all others had domed seats

The Imp had the same PCD - but not the same stud size or angle I believe? I remember we made special nuts with larger hex and correct angle to take Imp wheels.

Yes -all Minis are/were 3/8" UNF - but Imps I think were larger studs........

I see. I'll try the standard steel wheel nuts and see how they sit. Thanks everyone!

I felt the hole in the wheel was too big - risk of the wheel pulling over the standard nut and the wheel perhaps not centering correctly. We were using them for Autocross - first on 12" wheels in Scotland...... It caused quite a fuss with the scrutineer at the time - but he was impressed that we had made the special nuts, and it never gave us any trouble........ Folks thought the big wheels gave us the amazing traction the car seemed to have ...... no-one checked out our welded diff!
