Is fitting a ring gear to a pre verto flywheel to accept a pre engaged starter just a case of turning the teeth off the flywheel down the the size of the new ring gear and then slipping the new one on?

Just trying to gauge whats involved before ordering the ring gear and handing it over to my engineer.

cheers

The usual method is to drill a hole in the ring gear - then split it with a sharp chisel. Clean it all off - heat the new ring gear in an oven (beware - may cause domestic grief) and have the flywheel in the freezer. Then drop the ring on the fly and wait for nature to fix it tight! Just be sure to drop it on right way round!

If you take your time you can get the old ring gear off in one bit, big hammer, soft drift and give it a few hard whacks every couple of inches and work round and round.

Make sure you clean the rust off othewise it will wedge on it.

the only ones that are one peice are the Ultra Ultralight ones like on the miglia's,

some are welded on though.

That would be a first! No the ring gear complete with its teeth are about 1/2" deep. You wouldnt want to buy a complete flywheel just because the teeth are worn. All the above advice is correct. I have never actually put a flywheel in a freezer but it would definately help. Heating ring gear has always been sufficient for me. Dont hang about when offering up the hot gear to cold flywheel as the gear will cool very quickly and shrink. Edit:- havent come across miglia types myself, just normal ones, whether mini, agricultural, whatever.EDIT again, ha,just realised theres one off to the left that I was lightening<<<

I received my new ring gear today. 129 teeth for pre verto.... correct? lol

One question, people have mentioned making sure i get it on the right way, but to me, it looks the same which ever way i look at it.......? Aslso it doesn't need to be lined up to anything on the flywheel does it..?

cheers

Right ok iv had another look at it, and it looks like the is more angle off one side of the teeth than there is on the other side... so does it matter? Hoping to do this in the morning while no one is in :(

ive done one once before, heated the old one with an oxy acetaline torch, gave it a few taps and it came off in one, cleaned up the surface on the flywheel with a bit of emry cloth, then heated the new ring gear with the oxy acetaline torch, and using some pliers me and my friend fitted it onto the flywheel and waited for it to shrink.

It MUST go on the correct way around with the 'lead' on the teeth towards the starter pinion or it simply won't engage properly. If it does get fitted the wrong way round it will be scrap.

The pre-engaged starter enters from the front of the engine - so any lead-in needs to be on the engine side of the flywheel - the opposite is true for an inertia starter which enters 'from behind' :(

Ok so looks like the way im about to put it on... as by the pic is correct. There is a slight angle on both edges, but more so on the right hand side (in the pic)

cheers

Yes I think so - but I can't comment on the 129 teeth -I have no idea about that! Strange you are doing this - I think most would be glad to have the inertia starter on the pre-verto.
