Hi all

Ive got a non MPI mini running a MPI front rad set-up i bought off a mate, im improving the set-up as the rad/fan switch was in a hose take off on the bottom hose where it should have been running from the top hose where the hot water is.

Im trying to find a repalcement sender/swtich to replace the brown one in the sandwich plate as its a variable sender which tells the ECU whats going on, what im after is a replacement switch which has a 12x1.5mm thread and works in the right temp region 95-90degrees

Has anyone else done this or knows of a suitable item?

Cheers

As far as i can see there are 5 different coloured sensors, brown, black, green, blue and white. Get along to your local parts place and they'll be able to source the right one

Not sure about the actual thermodynamics of where the sender is best placed, but the SPI has the sender for the auxillary fan in the bottom of the radiator and as far as I can remember the sensor is also a 90 - 95 degree one. So I would have thought your existing setup would be fine.

If the sender is to tell the ECU what the engine temperature is then it needs to be before any cooling happens, and before the thermostat.

I think we need to know a bit more information. Are you running an injection setup or are you running carbs ??.

Are you trying to feed an ECU or are you just trying to switch on the fan ??

No its a carb'd MG1275 engine which has a MPI rad set-up, with custom brackets to mount the alternator.

Im just trying to switch the fan automatically as i have a manual bypass switch, what im trying to do is tidy up the coversion by utiising the sensor placement which has the brown coloured temp sender.

All im after is a replacement fan switch with a M12x1.5 Thread , should be easy you would think?

I could use my current Temp switch

Yes I suspected that's what your set up was. In your inital post you mentioned the switch was in a take off on the bottom hose. Now you say it's a manual switch, so I'm a bit confused.

All I can tell you is that the SPI and late model 1275 carb's had a sender in the bottom of the radiator to switch the auxillary fan on. This works fine so I don't see why a take off from the bottom hose should be any different.

Might be a bit of an overkill but one of these would do the job.

e-bay link fan switch

You may also get more advice if you post this in the general Problems, Questions and Technical section as theres more going on there and it's not a specific injection answer your looking for

Thanks for the reply, Im going to no get a thread convertor to convert from M12 out to M14 or M16 and use a temp switch from a BMW to switch the fan on.

The SPIs work fine but the MPI rad is much more efficient than the side mounted variants so having the temp switch in the bottom hose means by the time it has got hot enough the engine is cooking itself

Will get a photo up when ive changed the HG and stuck it all back together!
