me old dears got a 56 plate fiesta tdci, when we first bought the car about 6 months ago, fuel consumption was very good, average of about 65mpg, but over the past few weeks it seems to be using a lot more fuel, we filled it up from when the light come on, 45 litres, the cars done about 300 miles of mixed driving. Which works out to be about 35mpg, which i think is pretty rubbish, considering the 65mpg we were getting when we first bought it.

Seeing as i only work on classic cars and have never really touched a modern car, has anyone got any ideas what could be wrong, or is it a case of take it for main dealer for a diagnostics and spend lots of money? Thanks again tmf!

Where are you buying your diesel from?? i used to get mine from Tesco's as it was cheap with the old vouchers, however my consumption was poor. Instead of high 40's early 50's i was getting high 30's early 40's. Not happy considering i do over 540 miles per week.

Went back to Morrisons and bingo fuel consumption was back to normal. I went the diagnostics route, no fault found, tyre pressures, had my driving style changed etc but no all was as per normal it was just down to the fuel.

Has your car been serviced regularly?? do get a fault code read it may show something. The MAF is always a prime suspect on turbo diesel motors. Have you noticed a loss in power?

My car is not a Ford but a VW Passat but the components are the same. It could be a small air/vaccum pipe has become disconnected etc.
Does it chuck out more smoke than normal. The list goes on and on i'm afraid.

You could try joining a Ford forum for festers and see if they can through any light on your problem.

well, it says on the filler cap, that ford reccomends using bp fuel, so we only use bp fuel in it. As for servicing goes, i doe an oil and filter change 3,000 miles ago, and changed the air filter, couldnt think of anything else to change. Tyre pressures are done every fortnight.

Urm, it does hesitate a bit when pulling away if you dont slip the clutch, but i kind of guessed its turbolag? Me mum said it messed around the other day when she was pulling onto a roundabout, hesitated for a few seconds with virtually no power.

any odd noises coming from the car recently, cyclonic turbo noises etc have a look if you can block off the EGR valve.

check the piping if your having turbo hesitation too, might be leaking boost

on a Diesel you do this for a service

Oil
Oil filter
Fuel Filter
Air Filter

then i flush engine injector cleaner through

just to make sure i get it all clean

but alot of fuel lately is proper crap and what it says on ur Fuel cap is RUBBISH! use what fuel you think and like, they put that on so they get money from it only reason big fuel companys pay to get it put on there cars! just one big scam :)

if i remeber rightly if it is the Endura engine they like messing EGR valves up aswell! like to make them stick on a bit so it under powers the car!

Mmm should be no need to slip the clutch, its not turbo lag, the lack of power on the roundabout means there is a problem. Take it to a garage and get a diagnostic done. It could be the MAF or the EGR or something else. Unfortunately with modern diesels they like everything to run right so if a sensor is down it will make a huge difference. You do not have to take it to a main Ford dealer, any decent garage will have the facility to fault code read.

EGR is exhaust gas recirculation, takes boost line or somewhere i think and recirulates some exhaust gasses for emissions purposes...just block it off :) you dont need it

soo any ideas how much ill be looking at for diagnostic?

And by MAF, i guess you mean mass air flow sensor? I hate modern cars, lol, i done my apprenticeship on classic cars, hence why im kind of lost here.

Yes the mass air flow sensor or what i said. they normally go clog up with oil from the turbo and then burn out

new one be about £50ish depends where you go but im 90% sure its this :)

dunno why people moan about diagnostics haha rather than checking each sensor or looking for bits and bobs i just plug it in at work and then gives me a fault code and then sort it/ narrowed down from there
