1988 City E

After a few days of heavy rain, I noticed that I must have a leak into my boot as my emergency hoodie that I keep in there was soaking wet.

On closer inspection, although there's lots of rubber left on the seal, some water is getting in on the top right hand corner (driver's side).

I haven't got two pennies to rub together at the mo, so don't want to have to get a new seal (especially after a search on here reveals that they can be tricky to fit!).

Any temporary fixes that you guys can think of would be much appreciated? Ta v. much

Sorry not going to be much help but I love your "emergency hoodie" :) Is that incase you get stuck in a tight spot surrounded by chavs and have to blend in to escape?!

Are the gaps all lined up right? might be able to loosen the hinges, realign and tighten again to get it a bit straighter for a better fit. might also be able to bend the boot about a bit to get it to fit better.

maybe you could attach something round the latch so it pulls it in a bit tighter when you close it.

otherwise i would suggest duct tape, silicone sealant and keeping your emergency hoodie in a plastic bag :)

just a thought. before christmas whilst working on my mini i noticed water in the boot. thinking it was the new seal i had put on around the boot lip i pulled it off put it back on but leak persisted. my mate noticed that i hadnt put in the window rubber trim which was allowing water to get past the rubber.

hope this helps

What the hell is an emergency hoodie? does that mean your a part time chav?

Temp measure (chav stylee) would be to take the boot seal off and stuff behind it to push the seal out further and then check if your chav apparel is still getting wet with the boot shut and a watering can, or a can of white lightening

I'm laughing a lot at the hoodie comments guys :) It's just a hooded jacket type thing, bought from a mini show, with minis on it, and a zip down the front, that's seen better days and so is now kept in my boot in case I ever need it - maybe because it's colder than I anticipated, or if I break down or something!?! Explaining this has made me realise what a geek I am...

Anyway, thanks for suggestions on stopping my leak, v. useful, I'll investigate further over the weekend and hopefully sort it out.

They aren't hard to fit. They push on. The earlier ones which were attached to the boot lid are a little bit harder to fit.

And I packed mine with some cardboard for a few days till my new one arrived.

I'm so glad you elaborated, I figured that had you left your "everyday hoodie" at home and then found yourself driving past the post office on pension day, Having seen a row of old ladies coming out, you could pull over and put on your "emergency hoodie" so that you were still able to steal their handbags!!

Sounds like your boot door is slightly bent, maybe you've "rested" things on it when open?
Poor hinge adjustment or those supporting boot cables missing or not adjusted can also cause this from the weight of the boot door on the hinges.
I've wrestled and bent them back into shape, thanks pikeys who were breaking into my boot.
