1st, Check the connections on the back of the guages,
2nd, Check the connection (& clean it up) on the Temperature Sender on the front of the engine block (this can often get gunked-up & even come off altogether),
3rd, Check there are NO breaks in the wires in the circuit (a multi-meter is good for this),
If all these are OK, then I always start by changing the Temperature sender on the Engine block as it's relatively cheap & only has to be screwed out & the new one screwed back in (make sure You don't forget to re-connect the sender wire) !
Good Luck,
Aaron.
P.S. Buying A 'Haynes' Workshop Manual is a always good investment, if Your not too confident, as it will guide You through most jobs !
I've had 17 Mini's and I still use one to this day ! I've always done My own repairs on my cars !

if none of tha above work, take out the gauges and see if any of the soldering has broken apart, this is what caused the issue for me on my gauges

Why dont you remove the wire to the sender unit on the front of the engine, and earth it to ground. I normally jusy connect it to a bolt on the block.
Then go have a look at the guage. If its climbing all the way to the top and into the red then you know your wiring and your guage are fine. the problem lies within the sender unit itself.
This should always be the first port of call on either the fuel, temp guages and oil light. saves a LOT of time messing with wires and guages.
