Hello,

I'm looking for a T2 turbo charger from a Renault 5 gt and having difficulty finding one online. I live in Canada now and Renault is not sold here. T2's are on some American cars. What would I have to change on the turbo to make it fit a mirage manifold? Or am I going to have to replace the whole housing? Thanks

T2 and T3 are different flanges/hole centres. You can buy flanges on ebay. Just cut off the wrong one and weld on whatever you need. Or build a manifold. Its not difficult if you have reasonable fab skills and costs a LOT less than £350 for a mirage one.

sorry what i meant was, if i bought a T2 used from another vehicle (pontiac sunbird GT). I think the design is different than a Renault 5 GT. or am i wrong and the T2's are all the same design and fitting. What would i need to make a T2 the same design as R5 gt?

Im rubbish at welding and the mirage seems to be the easy way to get a good guaranteed fit. Maybe once i get to the manifold stage i will give it a go.

thanks

you should be able to find something,

as an example the GT17 from the saab95 is a vary good turbo, they are a bit tricky to get here in good condition but you may have more luck the other side of the pond.

There are variants of T2 with different specifications and exhaust exit fittings, you would need to research the Garrett part number of any you find to see what spec it is and how it compares with the R5 unit. Google the part number and you can usually find info.

The spec of the T2 on the R5 was fitted to a number of european car, but not sure they ever made it to canada. Similar spec turbos are available. For instance:

Garett GT1548 - may be fitted to cars over there, you don't wanmt the VNT one though.
IHI RHF4 - this is what I have on my mini, was fitted to a few cars such as Subaru Legacys, mine came off a digger
.

There are others but they don't spring to mind.

yea i want to just bolt it on really. rather than doing too much fabrication. as far as i know i should just have to modify the actuator bracket on the t2 r5 turbo. is there a particular year or part number it has to be to fit the mirage manifold?

That's not an R5. R5s have 4-bolt flanges, that has a 3-bolt. It's a GT15 I think.

tis always worth searching for a more modern turbo first as mentioned above, as if you need to work/ fab stuff to put it all on its no more efford using a better more modern efficient turbo, im using a gt2056 (not reccomended for smaller bored engines) but theres the gt15 and 17 and the above mentioned ones.

Some 11 years ago I worked for garrett (Honeywell Engine Boosting Systems) in Skelmersdale as a New Product Introduction Manufacturing Engineer. I only worked on Variable Nozzle Turbo's for Diesel, but correct me if I'm wrong but the NUMBER is just the size of the shaft, and there are many 1000's of specific applications, with many variations from inlet and outlet fittings, to the size and shape of the wheels, but I think this might help
