It can be done. There is a mini mag article showing how to do it. A mate of mine did it once too. This is another mates car with the fake ones from Japan
How was its done in the mini mag article?

You can covert a mk3 internal hinged car to use externalmk1/2 hinges, and believe it or not but all the required panels and hinges (the rare brass ones) cost me under £100. Witch just so happens to be a bit cheaper than those fake plastic bits of crap.The only way to do it is to change the all the panles to mk1 and that will be costly. Alternative and cheap way to get the look is false stick on mk1 hinges but they stand out a mile look silly and the centre line will not be centre when the door is open.

Oh, and I have no idea on the actually handles and locking mech, i'm not going down that route so I can't help i'm afraid.
