Ooooo soooo close. Mini got us all the way from Ipswich to Stevenage (approx 80 miles) on Saturday. No problemo - in fact was running even better than before. Trip back just fell foul of the water problem. Started getting lumpy a few miles outside Ipswich, and we just made it to the turn off before it conked out.. Luckily it was just outside Asda/McDonalds for quick hot coffee while we waited.

I called out Green Flag just in case it wasnt what I thought, and just as they turned up the mini started back up again, but couple of times as soon as I pressed the throttle it conked out again.. Didnt feel entirely confident it would make it across Ipswich to home - Green Flag man checked it and confirmed it looked like water in the dizzy (is an ex mini owner himself). Had it not still been wet out I suspect it would have been okay

Tomorrow Ill take the cap off and make sure its all dried and the point or whatever they are called are clean. but I suspect it was the last few miles driving through melted snow.

So our next job is to find a cunning way to stop the water getting in in the first place, done a search here and seen two ideas, one is a ice cream box, and the other is marigolds...

any more (preferably tried and tested) ways to stop water getting in the dizzy when driving in heavy rain??? Next time we have to stop it may not be so convenient.

Gawd bless the Green Flag man, insisted on towing us the last few miles anyway.. worth it for the chat about mini engines, motorbikes etc .

other than that little mishap mini was fine all weekend and only thing I can see is the hose to the radiator needs tightening.

my family bought us loads of gear for the car - tow rope, red triangle, first aid kit, AA UK road map, jump leads, wrench to change the wheel, HAYNES MANUAL!! yaaay...

if your out in the middle of nowhere and u need to keep water of the dizzy, a plastic sandwich carton is great the tripple is better than the double but it covers the leads and the dizzy great, or gut a water bottle

cool!! gonna try the marigolds... my first idea was wrap it in foil.

other than that little mishap baldrick the lean green mini machine was a great hit. Funny moment at my brother in laws flat, (hes owned loads of minis and has stuffed a 1300cc engine in a mini 1000 before) anyway, told him to look out the window to the car park to see the mini... couldnt believe it when he first said "where.. cant see..." and then small pause before he shouted "F**k me... is that yours!"

the rest of the night was spent trying to convince me to let him tweak it up...

I seem to remember he had a mini cooper years ago and a Princess I think.

Hello . Try and get hold of one of those plastic weather shields that cover the whole front of the engine including the plugs, leads, altenator, and dizzy cap. This attaches with two clips that are mounted to the two rocker cover bolts. They work really well and if you use a marigold as well you should have no problems.

already have the big black cover....

been and got me marigolds today. Will have a peek under the bonnet tomorrow. Might have a spin down the road as well if its still icy. Looks good for a slow speed lark.
