I was in the same position as you about 4 years back, I was offered a metro GTI and was considering doing an engine conversion. But you need to buy the aftermaket subframe, or build one yourself. Its also a similar amount of work to putting in a honda or a vauxhall, so in the end I didnt even collect the Metro, I sold it onto someone else and made a profit and they went and collected it!
for all the work involved, I would recommend a small block vauxhall instead (my personal opinion)

Straight up answer, nomight have got a chance of getting low mileage metro 16v GTI

You can use a metro subframe and running gear, but will need an extended front. Alternatively you can, as E.L.M.O says you can buy an aftermarket subframe and fit it all under a standard nose. Both of these conversions are far more involved and require a lot more effort than making a reliable A series.
The K series is much lighter than the Honda or vauxhall engines, which was why i chose it
The metro gti engine is also the same engine as fitted to any other 1.4 rover with a distributor cap.
All the other parts can be found on various other cheaper rovers too. The GTi badge has the same effect as a cooper tag, on the prices

with regards to the unreliable A series i was commenting on my experience over the past 2 years with my car.(some people seem a bit touchy on here!!!) after buying the mini from a friend who spend thousands on a morspeed engine and gear box
its had 2 rolling road sessions with all new ignition parts and still is not really running spot on.
so implying that it is caused by lack of maintaince is nonsence
