never saw one before but it cant be that hard to do, the engines wont be to much different in size, you could put an r32 engine in it, i saw one in a mk1 golf gti lol :D

Would be a waste of a mk1 Golf GTi in my opinion.

A brilliant car in it's own right, and rare as hen's teeth.

Are you sure you mean a Golf GTi?
I've heard only once of such a conversion and that was surely done in UK, it was a Van shell, modified for being a Saloon convertible with a huge nose extension and wide arches...

But, there is a german company, Mini Mengers who transplants a Polo GTi engine into the Mini.
Have a look here:http://www.mini-mengers.de/umbauten_16v16.php
(text in german, only...)

Cheers,
Michael

I have a Lupo GTi now, same as the Polo engine but with a 6 speed close ratio 'box in it. It goes like the clappers and doesn't give up till 7000rpm, so in a Mini could be a very interesting ride. 125+ bhp and a 6 speed box in a Mini will be very swanky! Do it ;)!

Reading up about these engines, I believe they were originally developed to compete in the Super 1600 rally class - which will be why they go like the clappers
