Hi all,

Im very interested in turbo'ing my mini in the summer when i finish uni, as iv got some funds stashed away for a rainy day. I was initially just going to rebore & rebuild the engine, but if you're going to do something, you've got to do it right first time round - so i thought id go gung ho and go down the turbo route.

Basically, the spec im looking at is (questions included in brackets)

Target - 120/130bhp

T2 turbo
Overbored block to 1293.
Rehoned & refaced
ARP bolts (does my block have 9 or 11? & which is best)
Centre main strap - 2 bolt
Standard crank (unless recommended mods?)
Replace crank bearings
Replace cam bearings

New pistons (Need suggestions!)
Standard rods (unless others recommended?)
Omega piston rings
ARP rod bolts

New cam (recommendations?)
Vernier duplex timing chain
New cam followers
(Are roller-rockers necessary?)

Machine my current head (is that possible for turbo use & what mods?)
High capacity oil pump
Ally 2 core rad
Small intercooler

Recondition my current gearbox (will this cope with a turbo?)
X pin diff
(Should i change the final drive?)
Center oil pickup

Lightened flywheel
Lightened clucth
Grey pre-verto clutch

So thats it! I think?

I really don't want to have to put in straight cut gears unless absolutely necessary because i dont think i could live without decent music in the car and from what i can tell, SC gears drown out everything (although i like the sound itself its not one to listen to for hours on end)

Is there anything on the list iv missed or that is actually on it but isnt necessary (iv got a budget in mind that i dont really want to exceed, so anything thats really not needed, il try to avoid). Obviously i don't want to try and cut corners or skimp on quality parts either though.

Oh, i also need some advice on suitable compression ratios and how to achieve such a ratio. I'v been advised a ratio of 8.0:1 is good?

ayup mate

i think your going a little over spec when ur only looking for 120 - 130 bhp. a decent 1275 metro turbo lump will pull that easy.
did you ever see my turbo? ud be welcome to come and have a look if you want that way you can see whats involved rarther than
looking at pictures.

as above spec looks very high for that amount of power. Why dont you look at a supercharger? A lot easier to fit and you could get that power easily. From a 1293/1310

Eden mate - i might have to take you up on that offer. No, i never saw your turbo. You definitely mentioned it when i came to the meet, but you still had twin carbs and only 2 wheel arches lol Il PM you some time soon so we can arrange a suitable time and place. That would be a great help!

Yeah, im a new member on turbo-minis - got a grand total of 8 posts odd!! They're great there, although i feel like a plonker asking such basic questions to guys who've clearly been doing this for years, so i thought id post this here first!

Phil, you're a life-saver. Iv been through you're website a few times but haven't seen that 130hp build before!

No doubt il be posting back here soonish

Back already!

I know the mini gearbox is the weak part of the whole engine assembly, but are straight cut gears necessary. Phills guide says they're recommended, but if i can do without, it would be good. Im a music man, and the whine the box makes, although its a good sound to hear would annoy me so much over the top of my music!

I would consider them however if it was realistic to try and block out most of the sound with dynamat (or equivalent) or some other sound deadening tech.

OK here goes - my new & improved look spec. Have a gander if you please:

Modified head - 29mm exhaust, 36 inlet + ported & polished
1293 block rehoned & refaced
ARP head studs & drill block & head to fit 11
Metro turbo pistons
ARP rod bolts
Kent 266 cam
Vernier Duplex Timing chain
Grey diaphragm & AP rally backplate
Twin pin diff
Intercooler
High capacity oil pump
High grade cam followers
Quality main & big end shells
Other new odds and sods that crop up along the way.

Compression ratio of 8.6:1.

Sound better? It sounds better to my pocket at least!

Spec looks good but one problem metro turbo postons will be 1275 so your gonna need some new psitons. In this area I would get the best you can afford.
