Hi can someone give me some advice,

I’m looking at buying a 1275 in the next couple of days but it hasn’t got the engine plate number on it anymore.
so my question is, how would I register it to my car when completed?

Thanks any advice would be much appreciated as it finishes on eBay in 1 day.

As far as engine numbers go, I would reckon that it doesn't matter what you have logged with DVLA as long as you aren't doing it for fraudulent purposes. It's common practice for engine reconditioners use their own numbering system, so there is no reason why you shouldn't do the same.

Of course, VIN's are a different thing!

Well am I right in thinking that the engine number is on the vin plate, because I have the vin plate for shell but the guy on eBay that I’m just buying the engine from said the engine number plate has been removed at some point from the engine before he owned it.

I think I’m being stupid but I’m right in thinking that the black and silver plate riveted to the shell is the vin plate?

The plate rivetted to the shell is the VIN plate and has the VIN number on it, not the engine number. The engine number should be on a plate below the head on the front of the engine. There are a lot of engines out there without numbers on them.

If i wanted to register the engine to the car how would i do that.

so really the answer to the question is it dosent matter that it dosent have the engine number anymore?

Thanks

if you sent the number plate to one of those txt checks it shud tell you what engine should be in it .. so you now if it is right ..
you could also phone dvla an ask them if you can register the engine to the car ..

Ignore anything above about VIN's, they bear no relation to the engine number at all.... also you don't have the VIN number of the car the engine originated from .... so what is the point of doing a check on your own car ???

You can change the engine number of YOUR vehicle by entering something like "UNKNOWN" or "BLANK" in the engine number box and the new CC in the associated box...

However, DVLA/VOSA are now getting a little hot on vehicle details changes, and may require evidence of engine CC and also a report/receipt from engine re-conditioner or engineer.

Thanks mate that’s great, I was going to get the number plate of the guy I might be buying it of that way it’s not my car I’m checking it’s his.

My mini is a cooper 1.3i if I put a 1275 carb engine in do I have to let DVLA/VOSA know about that?
