Hi Guys, im on the hunt for a Chromoly cage, got an OMP multipoint one in my saxo.

cant seem to find one for a mini anywhere! all i can find is CDS or T45 both of which are too heavy for my liking.

does anyone know anywhere i might be able to find one?

many thanks.

sure i read somewhere that there is only about 0.5kg difference in a length? (think it was 4m length?) could be mistaken though.

its a bit more than that! my chromoly multipoint saxo cage is 19kg, the equivilent multipoint in cds comes in at 46kg!

Its lightness isnt in the weight of the material itself but that you can use thinner gauge tubing to have the same strength. Its also a bit fussy about how its welded.

Cheers Ross.

yeah the chromoly cage in the saxo is 1.6mm wall, the equiv in cds is about 3mm.

my saxo one was mig welded which is acceptable if you can preheat the tube (it was also all we had access to at the time)

the mini cage will be tig welded, im still struggling to find chromoly if im honest. the only supplier i know is Andy Robinson Race Cars, which is about £20 per metre, i found a supplier in northampton but they were £8.50 per foot!

I can't comment on where to find 4130 in the UK, but are you building the cage yourself or having someone else do it? Having a cage fully TIG'd is crazy expensive.

Its not the Mig welding which is the problem, its the fact the special wire you need is much more expensive than a regular reel I believe, weve done it before at work.
Got a picture of your saxo cage by the way? just curious is all

bit of an update, finally got a price for some chromoly tubing, will be looking to make the cage for the mini as nowhere seems to offer chromoly cages, not going to be cheap tho as the material in straight tubes is £23 per metre plus VAT

it sounds like i might be buying a tube bender, mike already has a tube notcher. so might make some templates for the cage incase anyone else fancies one, and then i might be able to recoop some costs.

we'll see, im going to look and see how much it will weigh compared to CDS...

hmmm
