okay, looking at the dizzy cap, I marked on it which lead from each cylinder went where and as you go round the cap it actually went

1 2 4 3
:)

Second question, tried to put it back on again, can only get it on one way round, is that just thatit only goes back on one way round, or just that Im a clumsy arse and it can actually go the other way if you're careful

Ive got it marked that No 1 lead went to top right of the cap when it was in place (I think)

I have the cap drying off indoors for a bit and considering taking off the HT leads from the engine and drying them out too

Not sure if the car didnt start this morning because it was just TOOO FREEEKIN cold, or when I put the cap back on if I messed it up .

Yes the cap will only go back on one way, its designed to top you getting it wrong...

Normally the lead are fitted with No1 at the top right ( 2 oclock position) and then sequentially anti clockwise 3 then 4 then 2

cool - so I definitely had it the right way on... !!! and not being an utter muppet

concern was that the leads werent on sequentially, but from what you say thats exactly right anti clockwise 1 3 4 2

(it just died yesterday when it got sopping wet) Now Im not sure if its not starting because its still damp or if its just too bloody cold. Just waiting for mr dayzee to finish his shower and then we'll start checking sparks etc

just taking a piccie of the cap now.. think the connectors and stuff look okay - but one had white dust in when I pulled it out w3hich I guess would be a sign of which one got damp last night.

Before putting the cap back on, spray it liberally inside and out with a drying agent like WD-40. Use paper towels to wipe the excess back off (inside and out). That will also remove most of the crud in your photo... moist dirt is usually a very good conductor. Put the cap back on and connect the wires in the CCW order mentioned above. Remember #1 cylinder is the one closest to the water pump.

all back in place with marigold on. However I realised I left the bloody keys in the car and turned on so the battery drained. :nugget:

would have been funny watching someone trying to nick it and start it up... what with the HTL leads and dizzy being in the house.

mind you they could have pushed it no problemo

  charged battery for five hours today, plonked it on, turned the key and Vrooooom! hey presto instant start.. so figure my dizzy and ht leads are suitably dry now. Will have to take it for a bit of a run tomorrow methinks.

thanks to everyone for suggestions, advice, reassurance and everything.
