Hi,
I'm going to be servicing my mpi in the near future. Does removing the front grill give better access to the oil filter? If so is it easy to do?

Cheers in advance.

Yes it most certainly does give better access. Remove the side bits of the grill first and then the main section. it should just be a few cross head screws holding it all in place.

I'd like to see someone taking off the filter with the grill in place! :genius:
I took mine off yesterday, had to drive a screwdriver through it to get a turn on it.
(vinyl gloves come in handy)

The Van and the Pick-up did not have removeable grills. You just remove the filter from underneath using a 10" socket extension bar, ratchet handle and a filter removal strap. 'Simples'. Of course, the car needs to be jacked up with stands under it for safety.

Its not particularly comfortable on the MPI but when I've done mine ive not bothered with the grill - its definitely possible.

Remember, on the MPi, the filter is to the left of the coil (where the distributor used to be). It kind of points downwards. The filter is actually easiest to remove from above, thus spilling all the oil within it down the block face... however - to answer the OP question, don't remove the grille - it will not gain you anything.

Unclip the large water hose that runs across the front of the block, and ask an assistant to hold / bend it out the way whilst unding / doing up the filter.
