now have a carb coming for the mini . guy i bought from says he would recomend a good clean. what needs cleaning and how/what is the best way to do it and what is best to use to do it?

it depends. if you know one end of a screwdriver from another, then you could take it apart and clean it yourself (with some petrol and a stiff paintbrush). you'll need a rebuild kit to do it properly. if you aren't confident, get a carb centre to rebuild it for you. These things look quite simple, but the slightest mistake can leave it as a paperweight.

It also depends on what he means by "could do with a clean". it could just be covered in muck on the outside, or it could be so gunked up on the inside that you'd need industrial chemicals to get rid of the crud inside!

remember, this bit controls the fuel flow in your car, so if you get this wrong, you risk either blowing the car, or yourself up! be careful, and do it right.

You will also need to take the car to a rolling road to get it set up properly after you fit it.

he said it has just been sitting around in his garage for a couple of years, so i guess its just the outside of it that needs a clean.

with a good degreaser be a good idea to get it clean and thensome metal polish?

diesel (or petrol) and a toothbrush will get the housing clean. if you want it cleaner than that, then you'll have to send it away to get chrome plated! Let it dry thoroughly after cleaning though (and do it, and let it dry in a well ventilated area)

The dashtop you can take off and polish though!.
