I bought a 1982 mini 1000 back in april and failed to look inside the companion bins for rust (1st mini, silly i know)
i have since noticed rust at the bottom towards the rear near the wheel arch.
i have read that this is a structural area and should be sorted asap.
the mini has oversills fitted which seem fine/ floors seem fine.
was wondering how to go about getting this sorted and for a little peace of mind.

Regards

Ash

Quite a few ways to address this, some more destructive than others. take some pics if you can, hopefully then someone can then help you decide the best plan of action!

Get the oversills off, no doubt the original sills will be knackered as well, so cut that off, and bingo, you can get to the under side of the bins to do all the repairs, then put proper sills back on again and your minis back to the way it should be!

That depends how bad its gone underneath, if all the subframe mounts have got its a more involved job, if its just the back side of the sills then that depends on where you take it.

We charge £500 for a pair of outer sills, incluidng panels, but you would not be able to tell they wernt origional once done. Other mini places may charge as little as £150 or less for the pair but look like they have been bluetacked on. And if you go to a garage to get it done, then what ever the first number that pops into the blokes head is what he will charge!

Hope this helps

Personal oppinion : cut the bins out:P you dont need them and get in the way when you fit a rollcage:) if not it willl give the rear passengers some more leg room when in the back!

Harri,

Thats ok to say that if you are running harnesses and a roll bar but if not then where exactly would he bolt his inertia reel seat belts to??? To be honest the best way would be to take the outer sills off (if they are original they will be rusty) and then you can access the inside properly. The other issue you may have is corrosion on the inner arch close out panel (this is where it sits if you were unsure)
