Ive just gotten the mini working, and had a quick test drive, my first gear seems quite noisy, like the noise you normally get on most cars in reverse gear??? is that normal???

Yes, it's because 1st gear is a "straight-cut" spur gear (as is reverse) and 2nd, 3rd and 4th are helical.
