Companion box removal to fit Recaro seats
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have a C reg Mini which is a rolling project and I want to fit Recaro's out of an RS cosworth. My friend has removed his companion boxes to fit a very wizzy, space frame, FIA cage, so can I remove these 'bins' without compromising my MOT and insurance etc?
I will obviously be using full harness belts so the bottom seatbelt mount won't matter.
Are these boxes structural? they do seem awfully flimsy and they are only spot welded in.
What do you all think
Yes you can remove - but you should weld in some bracing to the base of the B pillar to replace the support the box gives it at the moment.
as above mine are being cut out as we speak but the B pillar is being strengthened aswell to replace the lost strength as there is too much flex in the rear panel if you dont do this
Really? that one 1mm thick peice of tin stops the rear panel flexing? i cut mine out years ago and not had a problem since.
I await Bungles IVA lectures.
Chaps, and chapesses? I thank you. I intend to put a roll cage in as well so I may pick it up as part of that.
yep it does, it doesnt matter how thick it is the concept is that when the door shuts there is then something connecting the pillar to the floor and stops it flexing as much but without that it fleses more and i wasnt happy with it so thats why i added some more metal to stop it flexing as much but still saved weight in the process
