Problem solved. Dr Distributor confirmed that a pin punch was the correct tool. Larger punch (4mm), larger hammer and more solid saddle to hold the piece whilst I hit it did the job.

------

I have a 43D4 100ay distributor from 1987 which I have started to dismantle to clean. Following the manual which says "drift out the parallel pin retaining the drive dog" I have tried to shift it with a parallel pin punch. It has moved a little. Too far to turn back (even if I could shift it). The pin is obviously quite soft. The punch is 3mm as the 4mm punch was just too tight (I thought) and I think that the punch is swelling the pin and wedging it ever tighter.

Can anyone recommend how I might get it out? If I need to drill it out, where do I get a replacement pin or suitable round rod to make it from? How do you recommend I reassemble it given how tight it seems to be? I guess it needs to be pretty tight as you don't want it moving when in service. Is there any thing other than friction that is meant to hold it in place?

Any advice welcome.

The manual recommends "Rocol MP (Molypad)" to lubricate the shaft (now I have it apart). Anyone know of an equivalent? Others use engine oil?
