iv got a 998cc with stage4 head, hs4 carb , mini sport inlet. iv got a cone filter on it , put it this way when i have the filter on its a HUGE restriction and its not like it hugely dirty its pretty clean , like i loose at least 10 /20 bhp and im pushing to get 70mph out of it , now for the last day and a half iv been running the car without the cone and it runs spot on without a hitch , is it safe to run with out a filter ?? or what would be the best filter you guys and girls could suggest ?? what about a pair of the girlfriends tights over it :) :) ahah

you MUST run a filter, or you will be re-building that engine in a matter of weeks!

It should be impossible for any air filter to lose that much power on a mini, a good one should not notice any difference, hence why even racers and drag boys run filters now.

I suggest looking at how well it fits and the lip around the edge of the inlet etc

It sounds like the mixture is a country mile out.

Have a look at the plugs and see what they look like.

No you don’t need to run an air filter, but if you don’t, you will also find your needing to rebuilding the engine pretty soon.

all cars its a big no no! there is a very good reason why a manufacture even of performance cars always fit air-filters. If you think about whats going on...dust and bigger particles are being sucked through the induction system and then the cylinder bore at immense speed, like some above said, you are in essence sand blasting your car internals

I've ran a engine with a open ram pipe for a good few thousand miles, you should run one though, a good one wont cost any power

Personally I run a filter on my mini as it shouldn't loose any power and wouldn't recommend not running a filter.
However, I don't disagree bigger particles do get in without one, how much damage they do i guess can vary as one stone could wreck everything, but my dad has never run a filter on his old MG, just open ram pipes, that did 240,000 miles in 50 years before a rebuild and that was due to a piston ring failing and taking a chunk out of a piston. Its done 10,000 since without a filter again and is still fine.
Your chice at the end of the day.
