Model: Austin Mini
Year: 1989
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):
Following are pictures of each of the pieces from a gasket kit I purchased for my engine/tranny. I've never been inside a mini engine or tranny. If you don't mind, please identify the various pieces of the kit and where it's used. This will be a great help to me (and possibly others looking at doing the same work)!

Gearbox gasket set.

Pic 1 is the gaskets that go between the box and the block.
Pic 2 is the transfer case gasket
Pic 3 and 4 are the timing back plate gaskets.
Pic 5 and 6 are the timing cover gaskets.
Pic 7 is the half moon seal and the timing cover oil seal
Pic 8 is the water pump gasket and oil pump gasket
Pic 9 oil filter gasket and petrol pump gasket.
Pic 11 looks like rocker cover gaskets but they dont come in the kit. Maybe they are tappet chest cover gaskets.
second last pic is the speedo drive cover gasket.
Last pic is another half moon seal
Pics 10 and 12 are the small gaskets that go on the oil pick up pipe, heater take off tap, speedo drive, gearbox to block O ring.

1 : Block to transmission gaskets, with thick and thin flange versions for the front flange.
2 : Block to transfer gear case, the transfer gear case replaces what would be the back plate on a conventional engine.
3 & 4 : Block to engine front plate in different materials.
5 & 6 : Timing chest, early and late types.
7 : Timing cover crank seal and 'half moon' seal for sealing the front main bearing cap to the transmission case.
8 : Water pump and oil pump (the round one).
9 : Fuel pump or blanking plate (brown paper) and 2 different types of oil filter head gasket (grease proof type paper).
10 : Block to transmission oil pickup O ring, sump plug copper flat washer, water drain copper crush washer, 2 x rubber tappet chest bolt seals.
11 : Tappet chest seals.
12 : Speedo cable, water outlet, speedo pinion cover, various repeated small seals (there's more than 1 gasket set here isn't there).
13 : Another different transfer chest gasket - ideally you need two for setting up the gearbox but they must be the same material and type. The two you have are quite different.
14 : Another set of block to transmission gaskets.
15 : Speedo pinion housing to transmission case.
16 : Another half moon seal.

I purchased the two gasket sets to replace all seals that I can WITHOUT removing the engine/tranny to stop oil leaks. It probably would have been easier to remove the engine! Today I did manage to replace both differential covers and seals. Then I removed the radiator and removed the speedo pinion housing and replaced the associated seals. Removing the speedo pinion housing was a bear of a job with the engine in the car! Next, I'm going to remove the timing cover and replace that gasket and the crank seal.

Where are the tappet chests?

Can someone please post a picture of where the half moon seal goes?

Thanks again for the assistance!

Where are the tappet chests?

On the rear of the engine (if fitted in the car) below where the exhaust manifold connects to the head. If it is a 1275cc engine, it probably will not have any tappet chests so dont worry. (definately will if 998cc).

You cannot fit this type of half moon seal without splitting the engine off the transmission. There was a type in the past that could be squeezed in to the gap and actually it ended up being a better seal than the original but I don't think you can still get them.

Got the timing cover gasket and oil seal done today and put it all back together. Still had a small oil leak after idling about 15 minutes. It's leaking from the left-hand side of the cylinder head gasket, just behind the bypass hose. I missed that before because of all the oil further below. Back to order another gasket and more work!

How hard is it to do the speedo housing gasket with engine in the car? :P
