Hello all,

I need to buy some new alloys and tyres for my '94 mini mayfair and I am not really sure what to get. I havent ever bought new wheels for a car so I a bit of a noob with this, please excuse any silly questions.

The wheels on there atm are 12x5 but they do rub ever so slightly at the front if I am turning full lock. I like wide rims, they look pretty mean, what would be the widest alloys I could get? And considering I need new tyres anyway, what kind of stretch could I get away with to stop the rubbing? What size alloys and tyres would you recommend?

As for the general look of them, I am a bit of a fan of the black alloys with the red ring around the edge, and my car is red so I think this will look nice. A bit like these ones - THIS - and THIS (the size might vary depending on your advise obviously, just picked these for the general idea). However my bf doesnt really like the black wheels. What do you guys think? Do you think they will look abit tacky? Below is a pic of my car so you can get an idea of what they will look like.

Also, does anyone know what my PCD will be?

Thanks for all your help,
Miniature.

Hi Miniature,
PCD on a mini is 4" (which is 101.6mm). Please do not buy 100mm PCD, although it is close, they will not work!

What size alloys and tyres would you recommend?

Without cutting hte wings back, you are about at hte widest you can go already (5x12"). Do the current wheels rub on the arch extensions, or the original metalwork of the wings underneath? You may get away with trimming under your arch extensions, thus not spoiling the look, and with that you may be able to get 6x12 - but this also depends on the offset chosen (dished amount).

Thanks for that mate, that sounds like the sort of mistake I would have made, lol.

Also, just noticed the tyres in your links were both Yokohama A048s. Nothing wrong with these - very good tyre, but more of track day use - they are soft, some people can wear them out after 3 months road use. A539 Yoko is a highly recommended tyre.

Although only 5x12 (same as your existing), these with tyres are £150 cheaper (£300)
minisport 5x12

they also do a 5.5x12 for just a little bit more.

Could you wait for a mini show perhaps? Good deals to be had for cash...

The car looks great - but it is a bit low at the front if you want bigger/wider wheels/tyres - so first move may be to fit new rubber cones to get the suspension back to as-new. Good dampers are worthwhile too - Gmax are not expensive and I found them good value for money.

You're right there, bmc. "Classic cone sag" - I would agree.

I wasnt necessarily going to buy the wheels from Midland Wheels, had just found a good pic of the sort of wheels that I liked that was coincidentally on their website. But thanks for the tip mate.

Those are really nice, and a good deal - but they dont have much dish to them. Do you think I could get any alloys with a deeper dish?

What size do you think I could go up to before I need to do any body work?

Thanks,
Miniature.

EDIT: My boyfriend is egging me on to get 7x13's - what would be the implications of that?? :techsupport: :techsupport:

Yes at first I loved the idea of them, I really like anthracite and gun metal coloured stuff in general. But then all the pics that I have seen of minis with anthracite alloys just kinda looked like they had dirty wheels to me and that put me off a little. Is that pic you took anywhere I could have a look at it? Maybe you could change my mind back again? lol. :techsupport:

yeah just uploading them to facebook then i will link, sure he wont mind.

13 inch wheels on a mini look too big sometimes and would mean cutting the front of the wing if you can fit them under those arches, that is also a problem with wide wheels im afraid but its not too much work really

Yes that looks well nice! The deep dish definately makes all the difference. Very tidy looking mini too, wish mine looked that good! :techsupport:
