Id say do it mate, dont listen to anybody elses opionions as to whether or not you should do it, its your car do what you want. I persoanlly like the look of a slightly stretched tyre, and so what if it doesnt work as it should, makes for a better drive :techsupport:

Also, take alook at the drifter and dub scene. That is FULL of stretched tyres and weird and wonderful things :techsupport:

There wont be any problems with that mate as its not a big stretch at all. I've put 165's onto my mates Scirocco running 8j's. Nightmare to fit.
He actually told his insurance company that he had stretch tyres, to which they were unsure what he meant so insured it as having aftermarket alloys.
He's been running them about 7 months now without any problems what-so-ever and that includes 3 track days :techsupport:

Oh, and forgot to say. Just do it matey will look brilliant.
Ignore the nay-sayers on here. People that sit behind their pc screen annoyed that they'd not thought of doing it first :techsupport:

lawnmower crap, you must have done it wrong then when fitting the dstretched tyres, its easy to do if you know how. 2 techniques that can be used:

1st being, place the tyre over the rim, get a can of hair spray, spray inside the tyre and light.

Like so

2nd being, place tyre on rim, get an air compresser thing, put end into gap, crank up to 150 ish psi, then pull the leaver and stick 150 psi into the gap.

like so http://www.youtube.c...feature=related

also one thats crazy stretch http://www.youtube.c...mp;feature=fvwp

I didnt fit them wrong, I know how to fit tyres :techsupport: We have a bead seater at work, however the tyres that were fitted to the Scirocco wheels were blatently stored in the warehouse with about 40 tyres stacked on top of them, as both sidewalls were nearly touching each other. This made it hard to use the bead seater properly.

why not fit cross plys? use the correct width of tyre and get that ready stretched look :techsupport:

by the way, bear in mind construction and use.

Big pink letters at the top, please read them before posting.

This one of those subjects that always ends up the same way, on a mini(AND NOT A VW) the rims aren't really safe to be stretched, the rims aren't designed to have this done to them. People do do it and do get away with it but from an engineering perspective its not correct and its not best practise. If you choose to do it then on your own head be it.

Must admit I think it looks like the tyre company has fitted the wrong tyres and the customer hasn't noticed.

When I posted this i didn't think it would cause this must of a stir, but it's all good fun anyway.

So to re-cap then, although not technically correct, it looks good (IN MY OPINION) 165 mm on a 7J rim isn't over streching and it's not likely to come off at the first corner, sorted.

Here go's then

Am I wrong in thinking that the correct tyre to wheel size gives the safest and best handling charactaristics?

As I already said, i've stretched wider tyres that have done track days, so I wouldnt be concerned if I were you.
