Model: Mayfair
Year:1989
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):

So, just hopped into the ladies Mini to find that the rear lights turn on the moment the ignition key is turned (light switch is not turned on), and that the brake lights don't appear to work.

Is this indicative of any particular part or connection failure? It's dark now, so I'll have a dig around tomorrow morning, but it might help speed things along if any of you kind folks have any tips.

by the way: The car is 100% factory.

Thanks in advance!

sounds like the brake switch is either out of adjustment or faulty. have a look at that first it screws on at the top of the brake pedal

The only thing that comes immediately to mind is a dirty fusebox. Take it off the bulkhead and clean the back of it, clean all the terminals and give them a smear of Vaseline once reconnected. Give the back of the box a thin coat too. If it does turn out to be this, ultimately a new fusebox is the best cure.

I would start with the brake light switch on the pedal, sounds like it's stuck on all the time.

wassupcrew and MacroMan were both right - It was a dead brake pedal switch, and in fact it was the brake lights being permanently on.

While I was at it I took the liberty to clean up the fusebox, sorted out the dirty door light switches, and fixed a broken wire on the brake reservoir cap.

Thanks guys, your suggestions were really helpful.

:)
