Hi, I have a 1983 998cc mini mayfair, it's fitted with a su hs4 carb, well, I haven't started her for awhile (8 weeks) it's kept outside but is covered up. The weather was mild here today so I thought a perfect day to start the old girl up. She started the 3rd turn of the key but was running lumpy. I cleaned the plugs which were sooty. I checked the points, leads and cleaned the dist cap and rotor arm etc, etc, She started but would not rev. so after a bit of investagation I thought it was the carb settings (Doh!!! wrong!!!) anyway after playing with the jet adjusting nut there was no change and she was still would not rev. anyway it turned out to be the carb piston dampner stuck down after lifting the dampner and adding a bit of oil she started and was revving great. After I stopped revving the car it cut out and now it wont start and I can't remember in what postion the jet adjusting nut was. Does anyone know the basic settings of a su hs4 please, please. Any help would be very very useful.

I think if you remove the suction chamber and piston, screw the mixture nut upwards until the top of the jet is level with the outer brass ring it slides in then screw it down 1 1/2 to 2 turns (9 to 12 flats), this should give you a good starting point.
Once running and warmed up with the choke off, screw the nut up and down to get to a point where the idle speed is quickest.

Hii lads, I would like to say a BIG thank you to Suchislife and Tommy13. The infomation you both gave me was spot on and now after a bit more tinkering with the carb the old girl is now up and running again thanks to you guys. I took her for a run and and re-adjusted the settings again and left her. I will start her again tomorrow and take it on another long run.
Once again thank you lads for your vaulable input :gimme:
