MINI 1986, with three dial console in front.

On the way to work, stopped at paper shop, hopped back in car, turned sidelights/headlights on and nothing!! hopped out and rear sidelights are ok.

Decided to carry on as daylight was breaking through.

Half way there, the sidelights came back on, tried headlights and all is well.

I see from the Haynes manual the fuse box does not cater for the headlights/sidelights, so is there a inline fuse somewhere??? - that may be lose??

I did fiddle with the connections to the lights at the front of the car, but they seem to work each light independently whereas I had total no lights at all........

so where is the best place to look for a iffy connection please???

might be worth checking the black connectors behind the front grille, opposite the distributor. this is were the front light wiring meets up.

On mine there is a bullet connector under the bonnet slam panel where 3 bullet connectors (left headlamp, right headlamp and power feed) meet up. Mine was dirty, coroded and loose so a clean and tighten up cured the fault.

I had the same problem which was caused by poor connections between the fuse and terminals in the in-line fuse holder. There is very little contact area between the fuse and terminals. If these get corroded and/or the fuse spring jams you get no or weak contact and intermittent lighting problems in various circuits. Try finding the in-line fuse holder (try the wiring loom behind the carb), clean up the contacts and make sure the fuse spring is maintaining contact/pressure. Good luck - electrical problems like this can drive you mad....
