My tax disk runs out on the 28/02/11 and I have just tried to tax my Mini online but according to the vehicle database my car is showing as having no insurance. I paid my insurance in full last July and I have just checked my registration details etc on the policy and they are all correct. Tried to ring the insurance but they are closed till monday. I am quite suprised that I have not been stopped by the police. Has anyone else ever been insured but the database showing no insurance.

Try this web site: http://ownvehicle.askmid.com

On it you can chek what the motor insurance database holds about your car. If the information here is correct try the DVLA site again, if not you will need to speak to your insurance company and tax the car at a Post Office in the meantime.

You do need the database to be correct or you may well get stopped by the Police.

Hope this helps

Not all companies are part of the insurance database.

Thanks for that information however I just asked MID and that to shows my car as having no insurance. I will tax it tomorrow at the post office and ring my insurance first thing on Monday.

You're quite right, apparently it's not optional any more under a European law. I don't know how they'd get self insured cars to comply with the law!

Well you don't technically need third party insurance if you can prove you can provide the same level of indemnity as offered by a third party policy. This means having a specific bank account with several million pounds in sitting there for no other purpose other than to cover you on the road and administered by your solicitor. For very wealthy people with large collections of very expensive vehicles, it's a better option than insurance. In the same way large companies such as the BBC (I only mention them because I work for them from time to time so I know about them) don't actually have employer's liability cover, they cover themselves because they have more money than the insurance company would.

I will try and clear this up with my insurance company on Monday and I will post the reasons they give me as to why my Mini is/was not on the database. In the meantime I have this morning been to the post office with my tax reminder, certificate of insurance, MOT certificate and payment and I taxed the Mini without any problems. My biggest concern with my Mini not showing as being insured on the vehicle database is getting pulled over by the police. Since getting insured in July 10 I have only done 1200 miles but If a traffic car was to pass me with ANPR it would flag up as uninsured and I guess they would believe their system rather than joe bloggs motorist. That's not a dig at the police but we've all seen the police camera type programs where the police stop illegal motorists who do have no insurance but they they will always try and get away with it and swear black is white that they are insured. I would be in the same boat.

If you keep details of your insurance on you the Police should ring the insurers from the roadside to confirm that you do have cover. Having said that there have been lots of cases where cars have been seized even though they are insured. If this happens it's usually possible to get the car back and the points/fine overturned though but it does mean a load of hassle.

Have you checked your insurance documents - is the reg right?! A friend of mine found out having owned his car for 6 months (when trying to tax it) that his insurance company had switched two of the umbers in his reg, it hadn't flagged up at the time because the "other" reg was the same type of car, and he hadn't realised until he took a good look at it

I did indeed check my registration details etc on the policy and they are all correct. I will see what my insurance company say about it on Monday. I guess it's worth checking your own details on the MID website just to be sure.

Monday morning, I spoke to my insurance, they did a check themselves just to confirmed that my Mini was indeed not showing as insured on the vehicle database. They said they would again pass on my details onto the insurance database and If I wished I could again check my details on the MID but it could take up to 7 days to be corrected. I asked them how was it possible that my car was showing as uninsured and they said it's most likely human error and a miss spelling of my details. Nice one. I understand nothing is fool-proof but try talking yourself out of that one when you get stopped by the police at the road side cause the computer says NO. My advice is to check your own details at http://ownvehicle.askmid.com

I'm glad that you've managed to get it sorted before you got stopped. As you say we all need to check that our details are on there correctly.
