Or do I need to make one out of an old starter motor?

An old shell from a big end or main bearing, drops into the ring gear

Well find a bit of metal plate and bend it into a V. It only needs to jam the starter ring teeth against the housing.

Thanks for the reply. looks good. I managed with a small spanner wedged in, but I would certainly look to make one like that, just for the sake of owning one!

Are you suggesting someone make a load and just give one to you? Because if you want to buy one they already exist and aren't too expensive.

Well they'd be welcome to give me one! But no. From my quick google I couldn't find any avaliable for what seemed a realistic price aside some past ones on eBay. do you happen to know from where they are avaliable?

Thanks

Sykes-Pickavant used to make one that bolted to the starter motor mounts, similar to the design above. Worked well for me.

other ways of holding the flywheel include...
chain between one of the pressure plate bolts and the outer case...
spanner between one of the pressure plate bolts and a bolt on the outercase face (kinda less secure!)
