i just think it gets in the way, is it structural? So what if i were to replace it with a removable bit of box section?

The '90s so-called Works rally cars had removeable slam panels. Cut it at both ends and insert a doubler folded to slip inside the channel shape. Weld this to the body end and slip the slam panel over it. Match drill through the panel and doubler in the removable section and use push pins or similar to secure it.

Not sure what you mean by replace it with box. The wings will be flapping, well like wings.
The front of the subframe bolts to the front panel, so brace bars will be needed.

kind of what i was thinking of doing, what do you mean by a double folded? I guess you mean like a tag type thing for it to bolt to? Thanks.

A doubler, a piece cut and folded to fit behind a panel and double its thickness. Like where things are mounted.

I have made my slam panel removeable and it makes life a lot easier if you are a maniac for taking the engine out frequently. A couple of carefully positioned cuts can be hidden behind the grille and you need to fit/weld a couple of ears onto the body at the sides.

The slam panel itself is U-shaped and when you cut it out it appears quite flimsy. So I welded pieces to it in four places to create short box sections which stiffened it up considerably. You also need to weld some ears onto the slam panel ends (sticking downwards) to mate up with those on the body. I secure the panel to the body with three nuts/bolts each side though two would suffice. The BMC stiffening strip is unboltable at the bottom. The result is a panel which is alot firmer than before. All the work was done before a re-spray.

You can't see the third bolt in this picture. It is welded into the box section of the panel and pokes out of the back.
