Model: Mayfair Automatic
Year: 1995
I have a rover mini mayfair automatic 1995. When the car is started the oil light stays on however there is definitely oil in the engine. It also will not get into gear when chosen on the gear selector, meaning it cannot move.
Any suggestions?
Most grateful for any help >_<

The oil lamp doesn't tell you the oil level, it warns you of low oil pressure. If the lamp is staying on it is imperative that you not run the engine at all until you can test whether the lamp is faulty or if there really is no oil pressure. Your engine must have oil pressure, without any you will destroy it very quickly. Given that the auto is not selecting gear, and it also uses oil pressure to function it sounds as though the warning lamp is working fine and you really do have no oil pressure. Have you been running the engine for long to try to get the car moving? You could be doing very serious damage to both your engine and gearbox.

I haven't been running the engine, and the switch was changed 6 months ago and working fine. Have you any idea what is stopping the gear box from working then or causing low oil pressure?
Thanks for the reply

You need to perform an oil level check...... run engine to warm up only, stop engine after 1 minute (60 seconds) ie it is important...... then check on dip stick, I guess it has dropped off the end, you now need to do a pressure check, the pressure in an AP2 can get up to 150psi.

If not then look at oil filter, if this is ok then you posibly have a serious fault, ie bands or plates breaking up and blocking oil ways...

If you haven't been running it how do you know the lamp is staying on when it's running?

If oil isn't being pumped around the system then it won't go anywhere end of....... you have a viscous drive system that utilises oil for the viscous bit.

The auto oil pump is a completely different beasty to a manual, they can fail, however it is very uncommon. perform the pressure check before stripping down.

also another quick check is to drain some oil and look to see what debris is in the oil

Assuming that it is the oil pump, after everything else is tested, what is a rough estimate for how much the job to repair and replace it?
