Hi all I'm no mechanic so please bare with me!

Had a problem with my cooper stalling and not starting, see thread:
http://www.theminifo...topic=17343&hl=

Managed to get to the bottom of the problem, the ecu, relay or whatever bit of my car is responsible for sending 12v to the fuel pump is not playing the game, have checked this by using a multimeter while turning her over and there is nothing then sending 12v from the batt to the pump while turning her over and she starts without any probs!

Still stumped as to what may be causing this….

Any takers?

Relay box on top of the brake servo bell crank box. Cant miss it, its black, kind of wedge shaped, at the back of the engine bay on the left, lots of brown wires going to it. £15 from a Rover dismantler??? or new from here http://www.minispare....aspx?pid=33922

I'm still a little unclear on your description as to how you determined it was the relay box.

Check the connections and or replace the fuel cut switch.

You did change the fuel filter?

Just had a quick look at the relay I got from the scrappers and its got the part no. YWB 100710 (from a N plate R200 Bubble, poss mpi?) where as the old relay is YWB10022

They are exactley the same but i'm guessing their not interchangable?

Not paying £85 for a new one though, i'll have to pop back down to a scrappers...

any ideas what other cars have them, Metro, wedge shape R200?

I'd definitely check all the connections. I've had several ECU fuel related problems and they all came down to corroded connections or bad earth points. It took a session on a fault code reader to tell me it was a 75p wire. You could save a whole heap of money - or not!

Best of luck.

I was about to say that you shouldn't assume it's electrically the same just 'because it looks the same. I doubt that you'd find exactly the same part on another car as the Mini fuel injection systems (even the MEMS version) are fairly unique to the Mini because of the A series engine. Mini's have a lot less electrical stuff in them as well so this relay will probably be very different (other cars use it to control many parts of the fuel and body systems). Try phoning a Mini specialist breaker (M&M's for example).

While it is quite likely to be the relay (they are known to fail) it could be another problem. Have you had the fault codes read? If the alarm has lost it's memory for example (battery flat for too long) you would also find this fault as the alarm needs to recognise the engine ECU's codes from its memory before it will allow the engine to start, and it prevents starting by using the relay pack as an immobiliser. In this case changing the relay pack would make no difference.

I was told that the relay was a direct replacement (by a forum member!) but I really should have checked the part no's.

Any more ideas where I can get a relay cheap?

Or.... any spi owning forum members from the W Yorks area fancy letting me pop around and try the relay from their cooper so I can confirm / eliminate the relay, I dont fancy shelling out for a relay if its not the problem!

Neil

Where can you go to get a fault code reader?

I want to see the engineer doing it as i payed an old rover dealership £75 for a diagnosis and they came back saying it might be the ECU.

EDIT: Right, i took the ECU off, and there is a small pipe with GVC on it. It was plugged into the ECU, but there was no resistance on the other end, so im guessing its not plugged in, or not enough at all.

Really need someone to help me with this. 2 questions -

a) What does GVC mean?
B) And do you know where the other end of the pipe should be connected?

Thanks.!

cheers mate, but he'sa long way from me!

anyways! i found the problem out at last!

the ECU had a lose connection. The middle tube was connected to the ECU but not to the breather tubes, so it was not pulling away unless you rag the engine

I removed the ECU and injection system, and fed the tube through to the breather tubes, installed everything, reconnected the battery and fired it up...Gave it some gas and seems awesome agaion. Taken it for a 20minute drive and pulling away smoothly, no delays at all, perfect!

Like to say thanks to everyone who has suggested things, i have learnt alot from my first mini adventure (ha ha).

Tom.
