Model: Sprite
Year: 1993
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):

The car to the best of my knowledge was originally a SPI, engine block is, and i'm going on the assumption that the loom is aswell due to having the 'extra' relays near the wiper motor.. (See picture) Can someone confirm that this is an SPI loom or not? From this picture atleast..

Basically before I go chasing wires, which wiring diagrams should I be looking at in the haynes manual? Injection models or carb after 88'?

So now, my issues..

Brake lights not working at all, indicators, horn, main beam (flash only), interior light, rear windscreen heater are very intermittent..

So I've found that the fusebox is wired extremely arse about face..

Am I right in thinking that the way the fuses are labelled in the haynes as in 1 one end and 2 the other means its the top fuses 1 being the connection on the left and 2 on the right? If thats right what about the fuses that just have one number? Are they the inline ones?

so far from reading the haynes i've come up with this layout.. Although off the top of my head I only remember having two red and two purple wires, but many more doubled up and in the 'wrong' place..

The green wire from the top fuses that controls the reverse lights, brake lights and rear windscreen heater where does this physically dissapear to after the fuse box? Other than the brake switch, which to add to the confusion definitely has the wrong colour wires on my car.. Neither side has a green on its own, and the other side is either black, or very dark purple..

Everything has worked previously, just not brilliantly! I haven't phsyically changed anything so i'd imagine something is shorting..

To try to solve things it would be best to replace the fuse box, some of the connections that look okay will fall apart as you remove the fuse box. Resolder new connections on and see what works.

1,2 etc is as you say top left, top right etc.

The "extra relays" are the separate hazard and indicator flasher units, they were standard from well before the SPI models were introduced.

It's not SPI, different fuse box. Many wires are doubled up because the fusebox also make a handy junction box. You can see what's what on a wiring diagram.

They are not, this car would have a single common flasher I believe. Rover switching relays are yellow and changeover relays are green. Rover flashers are black. The relays on the right of the engine bay are the indicator relay (not the flasher, a switching relay only) and the fan relay I think you'll find.

The sound proofing behind the fuse box can corrode the rivet joints on the rear of the box which can cause all sorts of wiring problems. Either cut away the sound proofing behind the fuse box or space the fuse box away from it to stop it happening again. If you need to replace the fuse box before fitting it solder all the rivet joints. This will help prevent future problems.

Also the inline fuse holders suffer with corrosion on the flat parts where the fuse locates and the springs can corrode. This can cause an intermittent connection. They also have a tendency to melt often due to the above problems. If you have any damaged ones it is best to replace them with waterproof blade fuse holders, obviously with the correct fuse rating.

PS You should be looking at the post '88 carb model diagram.

Okay so my little fuse picture above is wrong, as thats for fuses 1-4 on injenction models! So i'll start with getting all the wires going to and from the right fuses!

Having a brief look at the picture from one of the links above it looks more like my colour wires nearby the fuse box so hopefully I can make right!

The flasher unit is definitely still buried somewhere behind the clocks, I do know what the 2 relays on the right and 1 on the left link to because of the wire colours but can't actually remember off the top of my head!
