When reading this please bare in mind my limited knowledge of engine management systems.

I was thinking would it be possible for there to be a gas analyser sensor that would in the sit in the exhaust, and based on the reading from this and the other sensors on the engine, adjust the engine map to achieve the most efficient burn?

We forgive ya! I read an article about using lambda sensors to also monitor the mixture with an in car display, so you can see how well it's running and know if there is a problem all of a sudden.

I think I posted a link to it on here somewhere!

They have got even more intelligent........some modern diesel engines have a small sensor that 'feels' the vibration from each cylinder firing and if it starts to feel different then will change the injection for that cylinder to compensate !!!!!!!!!

Isn't that called a knock sensor that is used on most modern systems :dontgetit: . The most recent development in petrol engines is an oxygen sensor for each cylinder and individual injector control.

Don't see how changing the word Knock to male chicken is funny other than that you miss read it as being *male chicken*, in which case the laugh is on you

A wideband is much more accurate than a standard lamda sensor although more expensive will pay for its self because of the savings you'll make by not having to use a rolling road to tune the car.

Yeh, wide band is what I'm going to use on my project with the Megasquirt. With passenger who also knows what he is doing, the laptop plugged into the ECU and a journy down the motorway using the brakes as, well, a brake, mapping the ecu is easy :cheese:

oh and out of interest you might want to read this. and look who authered it
