Leyland Mini
1977

I have just noticed an electrical fault with my mini. It has been standing for the past 4 weeks and I have just replaced the fuel sender unit and fuel line.

Now that she is running again, I have noticed that my headlight main beams are not working nor does the nearside front indicator. The side lights work and high beam, just not the mainbeam.

I have checked the light 'rocker' switch which is fine, checked the indicator bulb and wires which are also fine and all 4 of the fuses are fine.

I have noticed that one of the wiring looms beneath the steering column is getting warm and think it may be linked to a relay but am at a loss of where this may be located (there is no red/pink relay in the driver footwell.

I have even had a brief look at the wires under the bonnet of the front grill but no close inspection as these are all wrapped up.

Any suggestions greatfully received.

If the wiring is getting hot that means high resistance - so pull the connectors apart - spray with contact cleaner (or WD40) and re-assemble.

No relays in a '77s lighting circuit.

High beam and main beam are the same thing. Have you lost main beam or have you lost dipped beam?

Mmmm, thank you all for input. I figured as much that there wouldn't be a relay, that would be too simple for such an old car.
I think it's looking like Im going to have to trace every wire, lucky me.. Was hoping it would be an easy fix

Check under the slam panel again, the wires are all wrapped up yes but the main problems tend to crop up where the two headlamp looms join the front body loom. This is a cluster of black rubber bullet connector blocks. Check these.

Thanks I'll have another look.
