I have just been replacing the inner sills and had to remove the side jacking points as they where rotton. i know that they did add extra support to the outer sills but do they need to be on there for the MOT? or can you just weld up the holes in the outer sills (when they go back on), as i normal us the front or rear sub frame to jack up the car.

i believe u dnt need them for an MOT but just be aware that a garage will prob not use your subframes to jack up your car so reinforcing an area for jacking is probably not a bad idea.... persoanlly i jack my mini up where the roll cage bolts through the sills.....

like i said, im not 100% sure so dont take my word for it just dnt think its a requirment....

If they have been repaired and covered over then not a problem as many people delete them like us. Just make sure that when they jack your car they use the subframes and not the floors or the transportation plates.

Those things on the corners of the sills/ floor pans are not jacking points, and if used as such, will push the floors up. It is a good idea to remove them as they are a rust trap, and useless fo anything other than what they were originally intended for. Tell any garage you take the car to for work, to use the sub frame to jack the car, otherwise they will just push the floors up. I am tired of having to hammer the floors out again after the last dyno operator never listened to me.

Edit, just realised you mean the central jacking point, sorry

The 'centre' jacking point is the square socket on the sill of a Mini saloon. It is fixed into an extension of the crossmember inside the sill and spreads the jacking load quite well if the sills are in good condition.

The rectangular plates under the end of each sill are called slinging shoes. They are also backed up by some reinforcing inside the sill but are nowhere near as strong. These are not jacking points, even though Haynes lists them as such. They are solely intended for transporting finished, bare shells to the paint plant, to the storage warehouse in a pallet and then to the start of the production line. They can't bear the weight of a built car and collapse if you try to lift on them.

I should also point out that the square socket only works with the factory jack, don't use anything else there as the car will just fall off.

so if i decided to leave the jacking points off, do i need to put any extra supports in for the outer sills? or is it ok with the outer sill weilded at either end and pleanty of plug welds to the inner sill and the top edge (door step etc)

The jacking point is part of the floor cross member assembly, and should be replaced with something similar at least to keep the rigidity on the body.
