for the prject im working on at the minute i need to get 2 totally custom made windows cut, one is pretty long at approx 1.5m, and another not much bigger than a standard door window. i also need to get a rear quarter window cut down. (although i think i may be able to do that myself)

so has anyone ever had to have specially made e marked glass for a project before?

ideally in the west mids/black country?

or anywhere in the uk at all?

We do polycarbonate windows, custom ones can be made from simple templates ;) Not e marked though, how come you need them marked?

Would they need to be E marked if the vehicle is being registered for road use on a Qplate?

Plastics for Performance in Belmont have made E-marked poly windows for some of the guys in the GTMOC.

Any decent glazier can produce custom shaped flat glass and have it tempered, it will bear the appropriate kite mark to show it's tempered once finished but it might not be the right mark for automotive use if the company don't generally do car glass. A lot of larger glaziers will make car glass though, my local place does. Providing the windows are flat you won't have a problem. There are places that will curve glass too but it's more complex obviously.

You can't cut toughened glass, you'll have to have a new rear glass made up too.

i will do a little calling around today, see what i can find out.

it is all flat yes, so shouldnt be too tricky i hope.

as regards perspex/polycarb, im really leaving that as a last resort for a few reasons really, scratches and flexability being the main ones. if it was a racer it would be fine, but i really dont want it to "cheapen" the car if you know what i mean? and someone did mention the other day that it starts to make the car look liek a "Kit car" if you have got perspex windows, and that is absolutley not what i want! and its not even my car!

Have a read of the regs as they have changed with IVA from what was required at SVA. From memory the regs for side and rear screens are pretty free but front windscreens are somewhat stricter and we've seen E-mared screens that don't have the correct roman numerals after the E failed (they have a normal number instead - a printing error at most).

Generally the recourse when people have spent the money on a screen that they know damn well complies but the little mark hasn't been printed quite right is to simply re-submit the car for a test without the window and then re-fit it once it's registered. There are provisions where the tester isn't supposed to accept it if they know a screen is subsequently going to be fitted but if you say you're never going to fit a screen then how can they prove you're a liar (especially if you've checked before-hand and you turn up to the first test with no glass). You can also say that you currently have no intention of fitting a screen but if you do dcide to do so at a later date then you'll ensure it complies with Construction and Use. Just make sure there's a permanent looking cover over any panel edges around the screen apertures. No windscreen also means no requirement for a heater or wipers or washers so these can all be dealt with later (or in the case of the heater never if you aren't likely to need one).
