I have finally begun to rebuild my gearbox.
I havnt got very far tho....
Only as far as locking second gear, adding synchro hub and baulk ring.
My problem is with the fitting of the top hat (1st gear journal). I placed this on the shaft with the needle bearing and first gear. I have only tried to push it on by hand but it will not go very far (does not go past splines on 3rd motion shaft). (i did not put a huge amount of force on it in case it got stuck on)
So my question is 2 fold:
Firstly is it normal for this to be this tight?
And secondly what is the best way to fit this back on? I was going to put journal and bearing and first gear on shaft then place an a bit 50mm circular pipe over the top of 1st gear and hit with hammer to drive it on.
Will this work? Is there a better way? Is there any risk of damaging 1st gear by doing this?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Yeah the top hat should be fairly tight upon the shaft.
I refit them by using a smear of oil on the inside and then use an ally tube which fits snuggly over the top hat and sits against the lip and knock it down. Then fit the bearing and gear

I would consult 'guessworks' before hitting anything too hard!
