Two nuts have been used on the production line, and both are still available from suppliers. Both are interchangeable. One is 1 5/16" and the other is 34mm. If you are going to be working on a lot of Minis you should have both sockets, if you have only your car to worry about find out which socket you need. The 1 5/6" is used in many other places on the car though, which the 34mm isn't.

Which model is the 34mm on? i thought that was just a minispares thing, using imperial threads

I dont think it was a particuler model as such it just seemed that later on they started usin the 34mm nuts as poeple at home had metric socket sets and it was easier for them.

As Dan has said I would check what nuts you have and then buy the correct socket. I converted all mine to 1 5/16ths because again the socket for it is used in other places and I therefore only needed to carry about the one socket!

I'm sure I've had the nut off with a metric socket before. Maybe a previous owner converted it to a metric nut...
Saying that, I've been stripping parts off the engine for removal and only needed to use a few Imperial sockets

You may well have - but that doesn't mean they are the correct tools for the job.
I've used cutlery to undo screws before now, but I'd be shocked at anyone advising me to do so

Charlie T and Dan are simply telling you the correct size tools for the job, if you choose to use something different and you hurt yourself, your car or others then you cannot blame advice given on the forum.

I think maybe the best bet is to buy both 34mm and 1 5/16

Just to throw a spanner in the works (groan!) we've also seen aftermarket CV joints with 32mm nuts!

I had to cut a 1 5/16 off of a CV and the repacement nut from Minispares was 34mm.

Presumably because you ordered the 34mm or didn't specify what you wanted - they sell both.
I would suspect if you just ask for a hub nut you would be supplied the cheaper, metric one:
