Model: Rover Cooper
Year: 1997
Description of problem:
I changed the seal on the gearbox selector yesterday, as it was leaking when I bought the car. I bought the anti-leak kit from Minispares to do the job.
When I took the old seal out, there was already an aluminium sleeve in there, and as I couldn't see a way of getting it out without risking damage to the casing, I just replaced the seal.
Half an hour later and there was a drip appearing around the seal again :)

Does anyone have any tips / suggestions that I could try to stop the leak? Do I need to replace that aluminium sleeve? I took care to make sure that I didn't scratch the casing, but I didn't check it that thoroughly (just wiped it with a clean rag)

P.S Sorry if someone's already asked this - I had a search through and couldn't see anything that answered the question..

Paul,
We have a pretty big leak today on Rick's new engine (puddle the size of a dinner plate) so I, like you, did a search looked for answers and nothing came up. So, I did a Google search and it led to this (see link) topic on the forum- how does that work?

Gear selector oil seal

Might be worth you trying the silicone sealer trick?

That sounds like exactly the same problem, thanks! I've got some gasket sealant so I'll get another seal and try that. Did it fix your leak or have you not managed to try it yet?

I've noticed the search on here could be better, not a complaint but I guess it's because this is a Mini forum and not Google >_< I think if you know how to drive it you can get better results, I need to play a bit more I think..

If it's leaked again so soon the gear selector shaft is probably scored and tearing the seal.

I fitted two seals -one on top of the other. But also check there is no pressure in the crankcase - pushing the oil out. Make sure at least one breather is connected to the side entry pipe on the carb.

Thanks, but it's an Mpi so there's no carb (sorry, should've mentioned that in my first post). Does the point about breathers still apply to injection engines, and if so where would they be?
It doesn't look like there'd be space for two seals, but I could try that I guess. I'll have to wait 'til the weekend to get under it again unfortunately, but I may try a combination of some or all of these suggestions!

when I fit a new seal I always smear it with grease then insert it with a correctly sized socket and tap it in, seems to work

So I fitted a new seal at the weekend, with a bit of gasket sealant for good measure. No leaks from there for the time being!!

Thanks for the suggestions guys

Did you get the aluminium bit out?
