Has anyone here installed an early mk1 style interior switch panel into their later Mini?

One thing I really want in my car is to leave the bottom padded dash rail off, as the paintwork underneath is lovely. However of course this means the existing switch panel cannot be mounted as normally it sits in the padded rail.

I notice that mk1 switch panels have 2 little holes for mounting - one on each end. Do these correspond to the two little holes on the exposed dash rail? Is the panel mounted in front or behind the bottom rail?

Does anyone have any pics of what I mean? Basically i just want a pic of an exposed bottom dash rail with a mk1 switch panel fitted.

Many thanks.

You could always fit a switch panel from a late van/pickup, which had the later switchgear. but fitted in the standard metal rail :P

The hole in the later dash rail is much larger, the Mk1 type switch panel won't nearly cover it even if the screw holes do line up. As said above if you want to do this you have to use the late van/pickup switch panel.

As can be seen in the link below, the larger type switch panels were fitted to the van, pickup and some very basic versions ot the Mk2 & 3 saloon from 1968/9 when the Mk2/3 onwards parcel shelf was introduced. The switch holes vary from the original toggle switches and through to the various rocker switch arrangements.

Thanks for the info guys.

The van/pickup ones seem somewhat difficult to get hold of. I may look at fabricating my own if i can't find one.

Thanks again.
