Hi,

Ive got a 1990 1275cc cooper.

I was testing out my new suspension yesterday and took it for a drive to see how well it drove. I was driving along fine for the first few minutes of the journey, then when it can to a slight hill I completely lost engine power. I tried revving it a bit and nothing, just completely lost power. So I got out checked in the engine bay, the fat cable to the center of the coil looked a bit loose to I pushed that back on and started it up again and it was fine.

Then on the way back home it did it for a second time! just lost power and wouldn't accelerate, I checked the fat cable from the coil but that wasn't loose so now I'm not sure what caused it.

It has been sitting not driven for about two weeks while I fitted the suspension and was waiting to get it set up.

So can anyone shed some light on this??

Thanks!

Fuel starvation? Carb piston sticking?

Yeah I did think of that, But it was fine like a week or so ago, and I haven't touched the carb, so not quite sure.

What can cause those problems?

Same thing, sort of, happened to me a few years back. Lost all power in a round about. Long story short...the ignition coil went out. Simply replaced it after checking everything else and started like a champ.

Is there any tests you can do with a multi meter to check if it needs replacing for definite?

you could verify if it is supplying the right amount of power required with a multimeter. I had an extra one and tried it, it worked so that's how i sorted mine out.

On another note, Just had a call from by brother at home saying that there is coolant leaking from the cylinder head around the gasket area, Could it be possible that a loss of power could be from a blown head gasket??

Thanks
