The car has to have been manufactured before the end of 1972.
I have a 73 registered car but is tax exempt as it was built on 30th December 72... that was close !!

Even if it were registered after december 72, if you can prove it was built before jan 73 it'll be tax exempt, heritage centre have details on this i believe.

Ps i have a tax exempt land rover log book for sale if anyone wants one for their 'collection' :fear: !

I was always under the impression that road tax exemption came in when the car was 25 years old...?

Used to be like that but they changed it so they can make more money from us road users!

so next year will my 1973 mini be exempt? or will it stay at pre 1973?

also, will the fact it has a newer reconditioned engine in make a difference?

The car has to be made in 1972 or earlier.

The easiest way to get all the details of the car is to get a heritage certificate, as Marc suggested... It costs less than 6 months tax for one and will tell you everthting about the original specification of the car, including the manufacture date (ie the date it rolled off the production line). If before 1st Jan 1973, then take that certificate and your V5C to a local DVLA office and they will change the class of the vehicle to Historic and given that you have insurance and an MOT will give you a 12 month tax disk.

Found the link... http://www.heritage-...ificateapp.html costs £33

If a car isn't tax exempt now, it will not become tax exempt at any time in the future (unless the government change the rules).

Fitting a newer engine makes no difference to it becoming tax exempt either. :(

If you really want to make 100% sure do as GW has suggested.
