Stiffer Suspension?

Hey all,

Stab in the dark but we are sitting quite low at the minute & looks awesome bit with 2 up, we rub on the back when we go over a bump & bounce. If we get stiffer rear shocks, will that stop the rubbing? I know the ride won't be as nice but look so nice low & we only use it at weekends.

Can anyone recommend a set of stiffer rear shocks?

gaz shocks... how much have you lowered the car by? as with the lowered you cannot use them on a car near standard height as they just wont fit

I am not completely sure but the bottom of the sills are about 3-4 inches off the ground

why do people always give answers that are just over the top?..

'the only real option' well tubbing the arches is ONE option

but by the sounds of it, the OP hasn't actually lowered the car, the cones have collapsed and the car has dropped. If you like the lowered look, then get some adjustable height hi lows. then you can set the height to wherever you like, adjusting it enough so that the tires don't rub the arches...

but in answer to your question...

yes harder dampers would solve the problem, at the risk of losing a great deal of ride comfort. I'd recommend Gaz or Spax adjustable shocks... but really the problem lies with old suspension cones that have collapsed over the years and need replacement or upgrade.

The cones are not old, it's had a fully restoration that's including subframe, brakes & suspension. We have brand new spax on there, we can adjust the height by turning the nut & locking it in place when we have found the height we want.

We have a nice height but still rub when we bounce, don't want to raise it up tho

You're stuck with having to get stiffer shocks then...or a bump stop.
Are your Spax adjustable?

Dampers only 'damp' - they won't stop the suspension dipping on bumps and sending the tyres into the arches - which by the way can send you into an instant spin if it happens on one wheel during hard cornering with a bump in the road..... Ask me how I know........ As above - the REAL answer is to remodel (I believe the modern term is 'tub'?? the arches) to allow the suspension to operate full travel without the tyres fouling. You could also fit AEON bump stops at the rear - or the method used on the later 13" wheel cars is to have stops fitted in the rear subby to limit the travel of the rubber cones before the tyres make contact. Lots of solutions - none of them involving 'harder' dampers. You MUST either increase the usable suspension movement without fouling - or reduce the suspension travel.

This is prob the easier & cheapest way to solve the rubbing then as I don't know how to weld so would have to pay someone to do it.

That's the fellas! Note that they act on the boot floor - so - is it ok/not rusty??? Rally cars would usually be reinforced with a spreader plate in that area.

Probably easiest to raise the ride height towards the standard height for normal road use. That would solve the problem completely and give better road holding on bumpy (i.e. normal) roads. Cars don't steer or hold the road with the suspension on any sort of bump stop.

They fit on the trailing arms.
