Went to the car boot sale today and decided to buy 4 leather belts for £1, got home and started cutting them up and fixed them to the bonnet and now have this...

Very pleased with the result! Have wanted the italian job straps for ages and never thought just some simple belts would do the trick

Luckily they dont, the leather keeps the buckle raised above the paintwork and they are pulled nice and tight so they cant move about

Looks really good but I think with the Monte Carlo decal and the cooper stripes already on the bonnet, the straps add too much.

Yeah It does look a bit busy now, The stripes have been lacquered over so I cant just take them off, got a new bonnet at brooklands though which Is just going to be plain red with the straps.

I like them... just keep an eye out for rust from the buckles... with them not being designed for water - unless you're a REALLY BAD shot! lol

Also you need to ensure that the metal buckle is not touching the paintwork.
It will gradually wear away at the paint.

Usually the ones you buy have a widened piece of "leather under the buckle to protect.

Ha ha brilliant!

the cheapness i mean innovativeness of teh mini community, never ceases to surprise me - good job!

as someone said the (i wont say original) the ones designed for the job have a widened leather part where th buckle is, which protects teh paint!

Heres the question, are they functional or for show? I.E to open the bonnet do you need to unbuckle the belts?
