Good on you for sticking with automatic!

You are probably already going for the best upgrade (giving the biggest power lift) by replacing the 998 with a 1275.

A stage 1 upgrade (exhaust, manifolds and carb needle) will give up to 20% more power and is relatively cheap and straightforward to do. There are many further options beyond this (stage 2, uprated carbs - in fact almost any a-series engine tune can be done) but the further you go the less power increase you will get for you hard earned cash.

There are some big bore 1380+ autos out there!

Remember that with automatic gearboxes transmission losses are very high so horsepower figures at the wheels are going to be much lower than at the flywheel.

As far as I know there are no upgrades available for the autobox. But if you are going to spend £1000's on the engine it makes sense to overhaul the box at the same time. With any upgrade if there's something worn or slipping in the autobox an engine with more power is only going to make it worse.

There are some people who are of the opinion that you shouln't update an auto beyond stage 1 arguing that the auto box becomes a weak point. There doesn't appear to be much basis for this and many automatic experts disagree.

There are lots of topics on automatic engine upgrades on the Automatic Mini Register

hope this helps, Paul.

You won't be able to put a manual engine on an auto gearbox without work to the oilways, so if you intend to fit a 1275 it'd be easier as a complete auto engine and box combined.

My 1275 auto has a stage 3 head and Hif 44 carb, it goes quite well for an auto and so far the auto box has coped OK!

Might be a good idea to PM Guessworks. He seems to be our resident gearbox guru. Im sure they did a very quick auto in a recent Mini magazine/world. The guy used the gear selector like a semi-auto!

Only the automatic is a transmission and not a gearbox :D

We have built 120+ auto's, but the parts are considerably dearer and some we get made in the states specially for our builds.

You can use the selector as you would a manual "stick" we hold stock of almost all the automatic parts for Classic Mini

I was only letting you know of the different types of possibilities, as Paul has already stated, 1380cc.... even 1430cc etc they are all possible, however you won't find the parts from anyone else as they are not available, we manufcature special parts for these engine specs, if yo uchoose to go down the route of a bigger engine, just remember that for any reliability you will need to get uprated clutch plates, bands and other parts to do the job, otherwise the standard parts that are available are getting worse by the day..... I have just recieved a consignement of steels form a well known automatic company and they are rusty.... not just a light surface rust, but deep rust that would simply ruin a transmission :D so yet again we are off to the drawing board :P

Be very careful if you're buying a used autobox - you really need to see it running and drive it before it is removed, otherwise you'll be playing Russian Roulette. Old auto boxes usually get taken out when they start to give problems; you could fit a one just to have the same problems you're trying to sort.

Much better to get the box you have reconditioned. It might cost a bit more but at least you'll know the real condition of it. Contact Martin at MRA Minis (see above) and get some advice.
